A woman's bust on a white ground: violet and lilac hair sweeps out to either side in thick, flowing curls, within which porous, coral-like textures and ornament appear. A pink-winged mask covers the upper half of the face; above it lie a golden cloud band and a small bird in the manner of a miniature, and a golden drop runs from the eye behind the mask. On the cheek a miniature figure in a blue robe with a pink sash has been painted, while the neck and shoulders are wrapped in fluid layers of colour recalling marbled paper (ebru). Where realist modelling of the face meets dreamlike motifs, the portrait makes a strong impression through the gaze turned towards the viewer from behind the mask.
About the Artist
Mustafa Sönmez (b. 1992, Konya) entered the Painting Department of Selçuk University's Faculty of Fine Arts in 2010 with the highest placement, graduated with distinction and went on to postgraduate study. In 2014 Sönmez took part in printmaking studies at the Süleyman Saim Tekcan workshop at IMOGA, the Istanbul Museum of Graphic Arts. With some ten awards — among them first prize at the 12th Bahattin Tatış Painting Competition (2014) and a merit award at the 16th Şefik Bursalı Painting Competition (2016) — the artist works in watercolour, intaglio and oil on canvas. In the work in our collection, a realist portrait is layered with miniature figures, gilded ornament and flowing swirls of colour.
