On the waterfront square where the dome and slender twin minarets of the Ortaköy Mosque rise, the bridge joining the two shores of the Bosphorus stretches towards hazy hills behind. At the left, a woman in a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses sits with folded arms at a café in the shade of the trees; in front of her a boy holds his colourful balloons up to the sky while a little girl in a yellow jumper and navy skirt runs past. Pigeons gathering on the wet, reflective paving, gulls gliding over the water and figures strolling along the shore build a quiet bustle beneath a pastel lilac and pink sky. The artist's signature appears at the lower right.
About the Artist
Faruk Cimok (b. 1956, Reyhanlı, Hatay) graduated in 1979 from the Painting Department of the State Academy of Fine Arts (today Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), opening his first solo exhibition in the same year. His paintings take as their subject the quarters of Istanbul — Beyoğlu, the Çiçek Pasajı, Taksim and Kumkapı — together with nostalgic trams and crowded street scenes glistening after the rain. For the pigeons that recur throughout his compositions, he is known in art circles as the "bird painter" (kuşçu ressam).
